It was meant to be a place of safety. Their home. Her sanctuary.
When Prue Bridgewater first glimpses the abandoned old house, it's love at first sight. Her husband Ray is not so sure.
The property has been neglected for decades, and Ray can’t help wondering why. But with Prue on the brink of a nervous breakdown, he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her sane, even if it means he has to live there.
Once ensconced in their new home, Prue begins fixing up the place while Ray is away at work. But after a series of disturbing discoveries, she fears she's losing her mind.
She hears things and sees people who couldn’t possibly be there, and she can’t shake the feeling she’s being watched.
As Prue’s hold on reality begins to disintegrate, along with her marriage, she struggles to tell truth from delusion. But things go from bad to worse, and soon not just her sanity, but her survival hinges upon the long-buried secrets of THE HOUSE.

The House eBook PM Prior DP Prior Reviews
I read this book voraciously and loved every bit of it. The house itself was a really cool mystery, the visions that plague Prue were well done and fascinating, as well as a bit creepy, and I really liked Prue. She is a flawed person with a really good heart and I can't see anyone disliking her. I really loved the character of "Sourpuss" and wished for more from him! I am a bit embarrassed to admit that I developed a sort of crush on him!
I don't want to give spoilers and ruin anyone's read. Now, why didn't I give this 4 stars? (I don't give 5 stars for books unless they are very, very good like the classics that last thru time) so 3 stars for me is a good, solid read, and 4 is good enough to truly want more. Now, I DO want more from this author, but there are some problems for me with this book that keep my rating lower than I would like it to be.
The really good - Prue and Ray are characters that I really liked, especially Prue. They are human, flawed, loving, and truly compassionate people. The circumstances that could tear them apart, or push them closer together, are ones that I came to care about. Prue's backstory and current problems fit in with her new circumstances more seamlessly that I realized at first. But they do merge! The dreams and visions that plague Prue are very creepy and cool and I can easily picture them in a movie where you get that eerie feeling yet have to plow on and see how it turns out.
The not so good - The backstory of the house is fascinating, not only thru Prue's visions, but what she unearths as she works on the house. However, both of these things never really come together in that there is no resolution to the mystery of why the house, its former inhabitants, and the reason for the continued haunting exist. Now, I don't need every tiny bit of something explained, but Steven King, as much as I by turns love him or hate him, fills in the huge blanks. He doesn't (in those books of his that I have read) leave huge gaping mysteries unsolved. This books leaves so much unexplained that all the questions Prue has (and you as your journey with her) are never answered. Of course I may just be hoggish in that I really want more!
The unanswered questions did not spoil the ride too much as I could hardly put this book down, but after I finished I was left so unfulfilled. The story, the protagonist, the visions and haunting are so very good that I was left very bummed from not having even the largest of the blanks not filled in. There is not even enough to guess at how the haunting began and why it continues. That depresses me because I loved everything else about this book.
The epilogue may seem trite to some people, but I found it both rather cool and also funny. I DO love how I can fill in my own blanks on that character! I was left a bit creeped out as well as chuckling, and that seems an odd combination.
To be a bit picky, there were grammatical errors, but not nearly as many as I have seen in other independently published books, and this book was written better than most. And there is an error or two in continuity, such as one paragraph that has Prue toss the flashlight aside, and then two paragraphs later she is holding it again. That was glaring because she was in a horrifying circumstance and you worry for her being in the dark, but then she has the flashlight again and you wonder what the heck happened to give her light again so suddenly. It was a bit jarring, but I plowed on nonetheless because I had to find out what happened.
If this book was to be rewritten and expanded upon, I would buy it, no questions asked. This book is good as it is, but it could be even better if Ms. Prior ever came back to it and reworked it or expanded upon it.
It would also make a really cool movie. )
very good
I love old houses. Just like Pru, I would have been out of the car and exploring as soon as I saw it. The problem with the plot is everyone is sketched out as characters, enough so you know approximately who they are but the back stories, the relationships, and the transitions were so rushed it was more like a short story with too much plot. There's no resolution with regard to what is discovered about the house. Still it was a good start to a quasi horror story, entertaining, but I think it would be worth revisiting by the author to make it more dimensional.
Met my expectations
Thought that this book was interesting and kept you reading long after you were ready to go to bed. It got a little bogged down in the middle but stay with it. It will be worth it.
This book left a lot of questions unanswered but it had moments of terror. I read it in one evening. A fun time passer.
A gripping tale with a interesting twist
Loved the book. Smooth reading. wanted more towards the end of the book. I give it two thumbs up. Look forward to more books from P. M. Prior.
