I love a good mystery, and have read quite a bit of romantic suspense, but sometimes they can come off kind of cheesy to me. Like the circumstances are so unrealistic or contrived to create drama and suspense, I just end up feeling like "meh". This book is the opposite of "meh"! Seriously, so good! The author does a great job of weaving past and present together to reveal details and clues. She has also created a unique Hero in Sayer. I found myself loving him in the past scenes, and distrusting/fearing him in the present. It really had me questioning and rethinking my opinions about him over and over. I love that! Caroline was a heroine that was relatable as a single mom and also as a woman trying to change her life. I found it fascinating how she so hated her past, and had fought to change her circumstances, yet her mind could never really escape it completely. Her past colored all her thoughts and interactions whether she wanted them to or not. The author did an excellent job painting the characters and settings of both the past and present scenes. My only negative comment would be that this is a cliffhanger. I HATE cliffhangers! I completely understand why the author did it, and I'm sure I will not mind at all once the second book comes out. My problem is I'm impatient! I loved these characters and want to see what happens! Even still, I cannot regret reading this book now and having to wait. It's just that good.Tags : Constant (The Confidence Game Duet Book 1) - Kindle edition by Rachel Higginson. 4.5 Thrilling Stars
"And in the end, the game must be played perfectly. Everything must go according to plan. Everything must fall into place and happen exactly right. The stakes are high. The risks are great. Yet the consequences are not enough to turn us away."
OMG!!! Rachel Higginson, you are my new favorite author!!
I will admit I knew nothing about this book going in. Caroline and Sayer's story blew me away! This is second-chance romance at its very best. Caroline and Sayer's story is told in flashbacks alternating between past and present day. Caro grew up as the daughter of a con man and thief, so she was in the life from the time she was a child. Skilled at stealing and lying, she meets her match in Sayer, a lost boy who rises quickly through the ranks of their Washington D.C crime family. Sayer steals her heart and soul from the first time they meet as children.
"He was the one constant in my life that had pushed me through the darkness. He was the one constant in my life that loved me beyond everything else, beyond what I was or had been or could ever be. He wanted me to be better. He wanted to be better for me."
Caro has escaped her old life with her young daughter and her lifelong best friend Frankie. They have moved to a small town in Colorado, where no one knows them and they can start over with a clean slate. Until Caro's past catches up with her and even her clever planning cannot protect her and her daughter from her dark past.
"Sometimes life doesn’t work out the way you plan. Sometimes circumstances change and sometimes they’re for the better. But he was my constant then and he is the constant ghost that haunts me now."
Rachel Higginson does a PERFECT job of telling Caro and Sayer's story, weaving together the past and present in such a way that I felt every heartbreak, emotion and thrill. THIS is the way to build connection between characters! Nothing felt rushed or forced and I literally could not put this book down. If you are looking for a sexy, thrilling and intelligent romantic suspense story, then 'Constant' should be your next read. And the ending!! But 'Consequence' is out now, so I am diving right into the next book. I did not want this to end so I am thrilled to get more Caro and Sayer!!
"My world. The one thing I’m living for above everything else.”
4.5 stars -- Another fabulous beta read!!
DAMN!! Like holy crap people. I was curious about this book from the first moment Ms. Higginson hinted at the blurb in her street team. I mean, seriously...how can you not be intrigued by that?? It was both everything I was expecting and totally took me by surprise all at the same time.
This may be a slightly different genre for Ms. Higginson, but she brings her epic voice with her to each of the characters. Honestly, for me it doesn't matter what genre she writes, I know I'm going to fall in love. Her characters have snark and sass and heart and depth. And the voice of the BOOK even screams Rachel Higginson. There's just something about the way she writes that gets to me every time, and she got me this time too. When you're having to talk yourself out of highlighting Caroline's conversation with a Cherry Coke bottle, you know you're in trouble.
I'm neither a lover nor hater of past/flashback chapters. But I can honestly say that they worked amazingly well in this story. They were scattered about in such a way that we learn just enough to tantalize and give us glimpses at both past events and the past incarnations of our characters. They melded with the storyline perfectly for me. And if I'm being honest, my favourite chapters were the past chapters. There's just something about young Caro and Sayer (and Frankie and Gus) that had me hooked. And I can't tell you how many times I was on the edge of my seat.
The present chapters actually provided a contrast in pacing. While the past chapters felt quick, the present chapters were a bit more introspective at times for Caroline. Occasionally that didn't work for me, but I felt like the pace picked up in the second half of the book, and it was a ride right to the end. And can I just remind everyone that this is a DUET. So, you know...try not to be too surprised with the ending. I wasn't.
The relationship between Caroline and Sayer was SUPER strange. And I knew it had to be. Honestly, I was wondering how Ms. Higginson was going to be able to pull it off. I mean, from the blurb we know that she was in love with him, and we also know she's now frightened of him...so I was curious how she was going to pull off convincing me of both of those emotions. And I was a bit concerned with how *I* would feel about Sayer as a result. But I honestly shouldn't have worried, Ms. Higginson makes it all work out in the end. I won't give anything away, but I both loved him and was occasionally disturbed by him. Which is a strange feeling to have for a hero.
Caroline was just everything I love in a Higginson heroine. Which is not to say she's a cookie cutter of any of her previous heroines, but she was flawed and frustrating and brave and sassy and all those things that I somehow end up loving.
Can I give props to secondary characters too? From past characters (Frankie and Gus) to present characters (Juliet, Francesca, Maggie, and Jesse) to evil characters, they all just added their own something to the story.
And now we wait. In agony. You have no idea how hard it is for me not to beg and plead for hints. But honestly? I prefer to wait and devour the whole thing instead of ruining it. I'll just keep chanting February, February, February....
